The Girl on the Swing

By Mark Brosnan and Douglas DeAngelis

Hear it as a song: watch the video and listen to the sample.

Small and slow is a town that I know
It’s dusty brown and mostly broken
We’re not cowboys or ranchers or fast two step dancers
Money and myth of the west we can’t show
800 square feet on a slab in a park
There’s no flowers, no fences, it’s not safe after dark
Homes labeled mobile seems ironic and cruel
Most live out our lives in this place as a rule
From a park with trailers on wheels long rotted
Short muddy alleys and cars that won’t run
A girl carves an beautiful arc through the air
Her black hair flying, her back to the sun
The girl on the swing on empty school grounds
Her soul rides the range as she flies through the air
like runaway train or a horseman with flair
Her spirit alone knows where she is bound
With a will she is going She’s a singular sprite
Propelled by the moment, On a quest like a knight
She’s leaving this town, she’s already gone
Breaking the links That held her so long
On a pioneer’s journey she’ll soon embark
Anyone can see this is only the start
From a small western town she’ll soon depart
She will gallop to glory, a pilgrim at heart
